How Ebay Works

March 30th, 2008

In order to get started with Ebay, you must first register as a new user, registration is simple and free. Ebay has no registration fees and general information will get you started. After registering with Ebay you will have access to all kinds of information about Ebay. This is how Ebay works:

  • When you buy an item on the Ebay site, you are buying from the seller (an Ebay member); you are not buying the merchandise from Ebay. Ebay is only the middleman for bringing buyers and sellers together to trade or sell their goods and services. Ebay does not buy or sell anything to the public directly.
  • Ebay ensures a fair trading environment that is safe and secure. You may check out the User agreement to see what all the rules are at the Ebay site. If it is necessary Ebay helps buyers and sellers by stepping into the sale to prevent fraud and enforce their rules
  • Ebay has a tool called feedback to help you get information on whether the seller or buyer has abided by the terms of the sale, paid quickly or sold quality merchandise. If something is wrong in a sale Ebay has Customer support to help its members in these situations.
  • Ebay sells thousands of items daily and helps you keep track of purchase through My Ebay.
  • Ebay accepts payments from credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Ebay also owns and operates a separate entity called PayPal which can be linked to your account for payment of your items or to collect the fees for the merchandise you are selling.

How to Buy on Ebay

March 30th, 2008

  • Buying on Ebay is extremely easy; once you have registered you may shop on Ebay.
  • You search for the item that interests you; there may be dozens of items just like that item so you choose the one that is offered at the lowest bid or best quality.
  • Then read the advertisement, this is very important because you will need to know all about the item before you get it home. On Ebay the seller gives you all of the pertinent information regarding the item you want to buy.
  • Bid on the item, you should bid the highest amount you are willing to pay. Ebay places the bid in increments so you may not actually have to pay the highest amount. For instance if you find a book with a starting bid of $.50 and you bid your highest amount of 5.00, if no one bids but you, you get it for $.50 cent. But if someone bids against you and stops bidding after $2.00, you will get the product for 2.00 plus the increment which can be any number. In this scenario if it were 5 cent you would win the object for $2.05
  • After you have bid, you wait to see if you have won the auction, if you win you will receive notification by email, you then go to the Ebay site and pay for the item.
  • Once you have paid, you should receive the item by mail in the allotted time usually 7 to 14 business days.
  • When you receive the item and have checked it to be sure it is the item you bought, in the condition the ad said it was in then you leave feedback for the seller.

Finding the best deals on Ebay

March 30th, 2008

If you are looking for how to find the best deals on Ebay, you may want to follow these few simple rules that will help you save money and time as well as finding the best prices online.

·         Know what you want? Find out the regular retail price of the item brand new. Then look for that specific product online, also remember to search using common misspellings of the item. A rule of thumb is that the price of the item and the shipping is not equal or greater than the price of the products retail price bought brand new.

·         Make sure you read all of the descriptions, is it missing parts that will affect proper operation of the item. Find out if all the parts you will need will be available when you purchase it.

·         Make sure to investigate the reputation of the seller, you should only buy from sellers who have sold at least 10 items and have a rating of 98% or greater, and be sure to read the actual comments of the raters

·         Watch out for low prices with sky high shipping costs, some sellers will charge extreme costs to make up for the money they think they should have. Be sure to get information on shipping before buying the item.

·         Pay by credit card or PayPal because you can have the charges reversed if the transaction is not exactly as you expected it to be.
